The product
What is TuffSkin?
TuffSkin is a professionally installed protective film for stone countertops. It is gas-permeable but impenetrable to liquid, creating a physical barrier that keeps stains and etching off the stone. Think of it as a screen protector for your counters.
Which surfaces can it protect?
Marble is the most common, along with onyx, quartzite, travertine, and limestone. Many granite, quartz, porcelain, and stainless steel surfaces can also be protected after we confirm suitability.
Is it the same as a sealer?
No. Sealers slow liquid absorption but do not stop acids from etching marble. TuffSkin sits on top of the stone, so nothing touches the surface.
Is it heat resistant?
Yes, TuffSkin withstands heat up to 400°F. We still recommend trivets for cookware straight from the stove or oven.
Will it yellow in the sun?
TuffSkin includes a 99.9% UV inhibitor designed to reduce yellowing and maintain clarity.
Installation
How long does installation take?
A typical kitchen is completed in about a day. Larger or more complex projects may take longer, and we confirm timing in your quote.
Do I need to prepare anything?
Clear the counters before we arrive. If your stone already has etching or wear, we may recommend preparation or restoration before the film is installed.
Will there be seams?
We install in one piece wherever material size and layout allow. Large islands or complex shapes may need a seam, which we plan and review with you first.
What about my faucets?
Wait 24 hours before reinstalling faucets. If a plumber replaces a faucet later, have someone hold the faucet while it is tightened from below, and avoid over-tightening.
Care & cleaning
How do I clean it?
Use soap and water or an ammonia-free window cleaner, then finish with a dry microfiber towel. Clean from the center of an island toward the edge, and back to front on counters. If there is a seam, clean in the direction of the seam.
What should I avoid?
Avoid abrasive cleaners, steel wool, and razor blades. Do not cut directly on the counter; always use a cutting board, and add felt pads under heavy objects.
Can I peel it off myself?
Please don't. TuffSkin is designed to be removed and replaced by an installer. Peeling it back is considered intentional damage and voids the warranty.
Warranty & cost
What does the warranty cover?
TuffSkin is warrantied to be acid, alkaline, water, and oil-proof for 10 years from installation, covering etching and staining.
What is not covered?
Scratches, cuts, and film that has been peeled back are not warranty items. Scratched sections can be removed and replaced, and the stone underneath stays protected.
How long does it last?
The film keeps performing as long as it is in place. Most owners decide when to replace it based on appearance after normal wear, similar to deciding when to refinish untreated stone.
How much does it cost?
Pricing depends on measured square footage, layout, finish, and any preparation needed. We measure on site and send a written quote before you commit.
